Painting the picture of protection: AkzoNobel

Posted On : Thursday 17th May

A sustainable plant needing long-term protection

AkzoNobel are a leading global paints and coatings company and major producer of speciality chemicals. AkzoNobel’s paint plant in Northumberland, England is a £100m world class facility, home to well-known household brands such as Dulux and Cuprinol and one of the most sustainable plants ever built.

As part of this project AkzoNobel installed nine fully automated paint filling lines, a further £15m investment, at the 100,00 sq metre site. What they needed now was to protect their considerable investment.

Project Requirements

AkzoNobel required flame arresters in their tank vent lines to prevent the propagation of flames within the tank itself or further downstream into the factory, should the flammable vapours from the paint chemicals become ignited.

The Elmac Solution

5 x 2″ In-line Detonation Flame Arresters
2 x 4″ In-line Detonation Flame Arresters
9 x 2″ In-line Flame Arresters (Eccentric)
2 x 6″ Pressure Relief Valves

Elmac’s UCA flame arresters were selected as they offered the client peace of mind in the worst case scenario involving unstable detonation conditions. The UCA unit features bi-directional protection which is essential in this type of applications. The low pressure drop through the flame arrester also ensures that the integrity of the vessels is not compromised during normal operation.
