The Project

AECOM were the engineering contractor appointed by Yorkshire Water to undertake the development of the new £23million Anaerobic Digestion Plant at Blackburn Meadows near Sheffield.

The Requirement

Elmac Technologies were invited to design a relief venting system capable of handling the maximum gas production of the digesters. A pre-requisite was the ability to handle the vacuum requirements should the digester tank encounter a catastrophic failure, such as damage to the recirculation pipework.

The Solution

Our technical experts proposed a unique venting arrangement utilising ATEX approved in-line ball valves. An interlock system was also included which significantly reduced the overall weight of the unit and also minimised the risk for human error during the day-to-day operation of the valves.
