Biogas

In the past decade, Elmac has developed a unique range of products designed specifically for the renewable energy market and particularly for the protection of commercial, industrial and on-farm anaerobic digestion plants.

The increasing demand for renewable energy has resulted in the need for products designed to protect people, equipment and the environment. In particular, suitable operational and emergency venting devices and Flame Arresters, to protect digester tanks and other specialised equipment, are fundamental in the production of Biogas. These needs require an in-depth understanding of the Asset Standards of the relevant Utility Companies who are themselves committed to constantly raising the levels of safety and regulatory compliance.

The Elmac Solution

We have developed the ‘Cowhorn’, a solution that combines a highly effective venting and flame arresting arrangement that can be tailored to meet client-specific needs for digester and gas holder applications. Our unique Foaming Relief Vent is also widely used in the industry. We work in partnership with OEM’s (Flare & Engine manufacturers) to develop optimised ATEX certified explosion protection solutions.

Expertise

Our highly qualified team of technical experts work closely with our customers to determine their application-specific explosion protection and venting requirements. Utilising sophisticated Computational Fluid Dynamics we are able to design bespoke solutions that can be verified using our state-of-the-art in-house test facilities. We are active member of the ADBA safety committee and regularly undertake site surveys providing reports detailing the work that may be necessary to ensure ATEX compliance.

Technology

Elmac’s unique ‘Cowhorn’ Arrangement, and Flame Arresters with eccentric bodies for (self-draining) use with wet gases, have been developed specifically for Biogas applications. Elmac’s Flame Arresters incorporate our industry-leading E-Flow™ technology that delivers higher rates of flow, lower pressure drop and reduced fouling characteristics. The patented protected lightweight ERB range of Flame Arresters facilitate installation in the most difficult to access situations and our range of high performance Pressure/Vacuum Relief Valves offer a unique PTFE sealing system designed to reduce premature venting (leaking) with a best-in-class <1SCFH at 90% of set pressure.

Compliance

Elmac’s products comply with all relevant industry standards including ATEX & ISO 16852 (Flame Arresters); API2000/ISO28300 & NFPA30 (Venting & Storage of Combustible Vapours & Liquids) and possible BLEVE (fire engulfment) incidents. In addition, Elmac is accredited to the following international standards: ISO 9001 (Total Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety).
