The UK has committed to bringing all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, the first major economy to do so worldwide. This ambitious pledge – now enshrined in law – can only be achieved if the UK transforms into a green economy comprising a wide range of contributors from wind and solar energy to electric vehicles, and from adequate home insulation and LED light bulbs to anaerobic digestion and hydrogen central heating.
In 2019, natural gas used for heating contributed to 32% of all carbon emissions in the UK. Hydrogen, on the other hand, doesn’t release any CO2 to the atmosphere when it is burnt. The challenge for scientists is to not only convert all existing natural gas to hydrogen but at the same time to use the existing infrastructure to deliver hydrogen from the processing plants to people’s homes and businesses.
The conversion or “regassification” of LNG will take place in medium size terminals, strategically placed across the country, where the CO2 separated and captured during the process can be easily stored underground or far below the sea bed.
Elmac Technologies has developed a number of products to be used specifically in those regassification terminals including a wide range of Unstable In-line Detonation Flame Arresters and Deflagration Flame Arresters. The units are available in sizes from 15mm to 900mm and for applications in Explosion Groups IIA and IIA1 which are ideal for LNG applications. Products are available in a variety of materials including Carbon and Stainless Steel, Duplex SS and Hastelloy – all tested to withstand the extremely low temperatures encountered during the regassification process.
The range of Unstable Detonation and Deflagration Flame Arresters features a market-leading flow versus pressure drop performance and a lightweight modular design offering easy installation and maintenance.
“We are really excited to be part of the green revolution and following our involvement with large scale Anaerobic Digestion plants, we are now investing in the development of products suitable for the LNG to Hydrogen conversion process.”
The Elmac tank protection range has recently been extended by the addition of an innovative, and newly patented Flame Arrester Breather Valve known as the FAB ValveTM that offers significant cost and performance benefits when compared to traditional solutions.
