Meet Andy McGlynn – Head of Operations, Elmac Technologies

Posted On : Tuesday 13th July

On this blog we are featuring Andy McGlynn, our Head of Operations and an integral member of the Elmac Team.

How long have you worked at Elmac Technologies?

I started my career with Elmac Technologies as an Applications Engineer in April 2011, before becoming Commercial Manager in 2013, and then being promoted to Head of Operations at the start of 2017.

What is your background?

I am a Flame Arrester and Venting Equipment expert representing the UK on the international technical committees that are responsible for setting the standards to which Elmac’s products are manufactured and certified.

I studied Physics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth where I gained both a BSc and a PhD. My familiarity with flame arresters began in 2003 whilst working as a Field Technician for university’s Combustion Research Group. In 2008, and prior to joining Elmac, I was appointed as Director of a company specialising in the testing of valves and flame arresters.

What departments do you oversee?

My responsibilities as Head of Operations encompass the procurement, production, projects, engineering and logistics departments. With sales growth being driven by the many new and exciting additions to the Elmac product range, the operations team are extremely busy updating our equipment, systems and processes at our manufacturing sites both here in the UK and in India.

What are your plans for the future?

As the world moves towards decarbonisation and clean energy, we will need to align ourselves to changing product demands. In particular we are focussed on New Product Development and have recently succeeded in developing the world’s first unstable detonation flame arrester for use in hydrogen applications. Our business plan is forecasting rapid sales and profits growth so it’s my job to ensure that my team is positioned to support the delivery of the business objectives. We see further expansion in terms of both applications and geography so we should be in for a challenging and exciting time ahead.

And finally, what are your hobbies and interests outside work?

Away from the office I am a keen cyclist usually spending my weekends mountain biking in the beautiful Welsh hills of Snowdonia National Park. My other interests include swimming, kayaking and sea fishing. In the very near-term, I am looking forward to what will hopefully be a Covid-free summer and spending as much time as possible outside enjoying the countryside with friends and family.
